Somebody said that motivation is not the right issue and if you motivate and idiot, you have a motivated idiot. People keep looking for someone to psych them up to get ‘motivated’, but this article by Deon Akintomide reveals the secret of true and lasting motivation.
Everybody wants to be motivated these days. Motivation, to a lot of people means enthusiasm.
Everybody wants to be motivated these days. Motivation, to a lot of people means enthusiasm. They want to remain motivated, that is, fired always. They want to keep up their zest so that they can keep doing, pursuing and achieving.
But motivation is more than that. If you look at the ‘M’ word again, you will notice that it is a word created out of ‘motive’. So motive, not enthusiasm, should be the reason for your zeal and zest.
The Encarta English dictionary defines motivation as ‘reason for doing something or behaving in a particular way’. So motivation is the reason, not the strength; it is the root, not the fruit of your actions.
Somebody has rightly said that motivation is not issue; that if you take an idiot and motivate him, you have a motivated idiot. Why do people keep looking for someone to psych them up today and get motivated?
It is because they have nothing in them that keeps them going. They must be ‘winded up’ again and again like a toy car to maintain their enthusiasm for life. That is why motivational books are top of bestsellers lists.
I want to introduce to you the secret of true motivation. It is word many today are not familiar with. Here it is:
Inspiration is the greatest single factor that makes for human success. On the natural plane, it is the foundation for true motivation.
Inspiration gives direction to motivation. You can be motivated in the wrong thing. When a man decides to be an armed robber, he can pick any motivational book in any book shelf and read to make himself a motivated and successful armed robber.
The phenomenal increase in crime today shows us that criminals are getting more and more motivated, and they are recording more and more success because they are having a greater level of confidence in committing crime.
Inspiration gives you true vision and lays down for you a POSITIVE reason for action.
While motivation, as people know it, comes from outside to impact mental realm, inspiration comes from within and flows out. It transcends the mental because it is spiritual.
It is divine. It guides, leads and direct. It gives wisdom and helps to make good choices.
Not Just Ideas
Motivational speakers tell you to use your intellect to churn out ideas. But ideas are cheap. You see, you cannot be everything and you cannot do everything. Out of the thousands of ideas that you have only one or two will take you to your promise land.
If you make the wrong choice, you may get motivated pursuing the wrong achievement for the rest of your life, so if your motivation is not founded on inspiration, you may miss it where it matters most.
Inspiration, by its very nature, is spiritual. That is why inspired people sometimes do things others think are stupid.
A man who graduated from the university with first class got inspired to start selling groundnuts. Now, he is a major exporter of that commodity, and he has employed even his mates.
The foremost private university in Nigeria is built by a man who trained as an architect. He got inspired to quit his job and start a church. That church is so large and influential that they could afford to establish a university.
The greatest advantage of inspiration is that it helps you even where experience will fail. You see, as valuable as experience is, it will only use past event as a teaching aid. But inspiration makes you see the invisible. It gives wisdom beyond chronological age.
The Inspiration of the Almighty
You must have heard of Job, the man who lost all his possession when God allowed the devil to test him. He had four friends. Three of them were very old while one of them was a mere lad. The four of them traveled over great distances to comfort him.
The three old friends looked around and judge by what they saw. They surmised that God was punishing Job for his sins. According to their experience and theological training, only sin could bring such a catastrophe on a man.
But the young man had a different opinion. All the while, he kept quiet because the others were older than him. Hear what the book says about the young guy.
Now Elihu had waited till job had spoken, because they were elder than he. When Elihu saw that there was no answer in the mouth of these three men, then his wrath was kindled. And Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite answered and said, I am young, and ye are very old; wherefore I was afraid, and durst not show you my opinion.
You see, Elihu had expected the old men to speak sensible things. He had thought, wrongly though, that old age was synonymous with wisdom. He continues:
I said , Days should speak, and multitude of years should teach wisdom. But there is a spirit in man: and the INSPIRATION OF THE ALMIGHTY GIVETH UNDERSTANDING. OLD MEN ARE NOT ALWAYS WISE: neither do the aged understand judgment. (Job 32:4-9 KJV)
That is the gospel truth. Old men are not always wise. In fact, there are foolish old men. If I should follow any old man, he must be the one who walks in the inspiration of the Almighty God.
Your chronological age does not necessary determine the level of your wisdom and understanding. When the inspiration of the Almighty God gives you understanding, you operate at a higher level of understanding that is normal for your age.
The old men had their way, but this young inspired man had the day when God later came to judge. He was the only one whose opinion was approved by God.
You will make choices, and without the Almighty’s inspiration, those choices are likely to be wrong. We are told every time, ‘Get wisdom, and with all your wisdom, get understanding.’ But how does understanding come? The inspiration of the Almighty giveth understanding.
This is not to disparage experience or old age, but to let us know that everybody, whether old or young, needs the inspiration of God.
‘Ideas rule the world’, they say. But what you need is not idea, or a bright idea, but a right idea. What good would pursuing the wrong idea do you? Hear what the Bible says about ideas.
There are many devices in a man’s hearT; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand.(Proverbs 19:21KJV)
Devices here mean ideas or designs. You can paraphrase that verse thus: many ideas run through the mind of a man, but only the one that comes from the Lord can be profitable. As you grow older, you will have many ideas. But only the inspiration can bring to your mind the perfect ideas that will take you to your promised land. The right idea is what is called’ The Counsel of the Lord’.
Many today are labouring in other people’s fields. They are doing what they are not supposed to be doing. They are running on other people’s tracks.[authorbox]
