My first exposure to using computer system was in my 200 level at university, around, 1996 when we were asked to run Q-basic code on the old Unix mini-computer system that we had at the school. I got fascinated about programming since then and I wanted to know more.
But I started learning how to use window applications on computer with Microsoft Office as far back as 1999. At a point, I knew I would need to learn how to work with graphics and images. My chosen application was Coreldraw but I never had enough time to become efficient with it because my attention was more on programming.
There was a time I decided to learn how to use Photoshop because of the fantastic manipulations one could do with graphics and images using the application. But my initial learning experience with it wasn’t too good. It was really difficult for me. I was discouraged with the way it works. I discovered you have to work with what is known as layers for you to perfectly edit each element of your graphic. It wasn’t like Coreldraw.
Just click on any item on Coreldraw and you are good to do whatever you want with it. Based on the fact that it look “difficult” than what I was used to, I just abandoned it with the belief that Photoshop is a very “complex” software to you.
As I began to grow my business I became so busy that I don’t have time to work on graphic again. But the need for images and graphic design was so much that we have to employ a graphic designer. Since there is someone to design, I never had reason to develop my graphic design skill again.
But once awhile, I desire to know how to design graphic by myself. The reason was that whenever I was working, I often have a need to design a graphic to complement my write up or the web application I was developing. I sometimes wished I could do it by myself without waiting for the graphic designer who might be busy with something else or not available when I needed to do the work.
For example, I do my work mostly at night and weekend. You can imagine not having good skill to simply resize an image in a perfect way until you get back to office to ask your graphic design to do it. Most of the time, I simply go to google to search for matching images and sometimes, I do have the concept of what I want, as it is in my head, therefore, I would have to manage anything I could have through the search engine.
Anyway, since I had no choice, I have to endure all the challenges of not having the skill to design my own graphics until few months back when I was at a tight corner which eventually forced me to learn how to use Photoshop.
I was running Facebook advert then and I needed to edit the images I would be using for the adverts. Facebook has the dimensions of the image you must use for their advert which is 1280px by 628px. My images didn’t the required dimensions and I discovered it won’t look nice using the images the way they were.
I started looking for way to resize the image into a perfect size. The resizing tools I was using on my system were not giving the exact dimensions I wanted. Therefore, I went online and search for better resizing tool that I could use. I got this site, http://resizeimage.net/ and I was able to resize the images but still, I noticed that the images were distorted somehow and were not as good as I have expected them.
I needed to ask my programmer to assist in adjusting some of the images I wanted to use because I have several ones. But I was also not feeling too comfortable for him to keep working on the images because there are more urgent and demanding works for him to do.
Our second programmer just resigned then, so he was like doing two people’s jobs at the time. Therefore, I was compelled to ask him to show me how he was adjusting the images with Photoshop so that I could do that myself. In just 5 minutes, we were done with the training. I was surprised because I had always thought it is complex to use the software.
I saw myself working on my first image using Photoshop and in just 3 minutes, I got the perfect image dimensions that I have always wanted. Whaooh! It was a breakthrough for me. I was like, “so, this is damn easy and I have not be working with it?” I asked him to show me how he removed the background and retouched the previous image he worked on and he did. Then, I saw myself adjusting, retouching and creating a perfect image with Photoshop like a Pro, just in a single day and I kept wondering and thinking to myself like, “Gbeminiyi, why did it keep so long to know this? Why have you been running away from acquiring this skill for years?”
I discovered it was due to unfounded fear, stemmed out of self-induced belief that the software is complex. Today I am better with Photoshop as I keep improving on the skill. I now explore my creativity to bring out exactly what I want in my graphic design.
If you go to my twitter handle at https://twitter.com/gbemmy20 you will see that I now post a lot of images with quotes and internet marketing tips on the social media. I couldn’t do that before until I learn how to use Photoshop. I love this idea that I can now express myself with images.
You know it is often said that “a picture is worth a thousand words”
I think this should motivate someone that you can learn and do anything you decide to do. Therefore, go for that training. Get that assignment done. Start your own online business. Conquer your fear because it is unfounded. Change your belief because impossible is only resides in the mind of a mediocre. Achieve your dream and fulfil your desire.
It is just a matter of you working on your mind. Nothing is too complex or difficult for a willing heart.
